In 2001, Jennifer Horsford had a fight on
her hands - she was
diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. At that point she decided that
an important part of the battle ahead of her would be to pour
positive energy and impetus into the notion of restoring the old
Breakwater railway in Holyhead. This had long been a dream
of many local people, but now Jennifer was determined to turn
the idea into reality - determination that would be mirrored in
the fight with her other battle.
She took it upon herself to gather interest from a host of local
people, commercial interests,
associated local authorities, companies and
groups. Her theme of capitalizing upon ‘Harvesting our
Local Heritage’ would encapsulate the essence of developing a tourist
attraction that would both compliment the rich cultural and environmental
heritage of Holyhead and to facilitate economic regeneration.
The initiative paid-off: The Holyhead Breakwater Railway Company was
established in 2004, and by 2007 it was running it's Land Train service
to the Breakwater Country Park and Lighthouse for a third season. And
Jennifer was still very much involved with the work of the company, which
was having on going discussions with Town and County Council officers that
have signalled favourable support towards comprehensive feasability support
funding.
